Introduction
After watching
Hilton Head Island grow and progress for thirty-five years as a retirement
community and resort, it is gratifying to now see community life increasingly
develop around families with children. Kim Likins has written a charming and
beautiful book depicting the animals and activities we see each day. The form
she has chosen emphasizes the relationships between our native animal kingdom
and our ability as human beings to enjoy and appreciate our natural
surroundings.
"Charlie's Perfect Day" is an excellent way to introduce
young children to the concepts of respect and protection that this wonderful
island resource has introduced to the world. From the very beginning, the
contemporary notion of the importance of the island's natural environment
played a significant role in the plans for development. Charles Fraser, who
conceived the idea as a Yale law student, believed protection of nature was a
key to permanently preserving what we originally found here. The idea became a
cornerstone for future development all over the world.
It is gratifying
to have Kim teach these valuable lessons to young children through her charming
and educational work.
